WARWAN PANIKHAR TREK

Introduction

Warwan Valley – Panikhar trek is a high altitude alpine trekking trail of about 92kms. It starts at Mungli, reaches the highest point at Bhatkol Pass (4390M), and concludes at Panikhar village of Kargil. The trek is full of extensive mountain walking with some steep climbs and sharp descends. Overall the trekking trip is not considered as difficult but of moderate level, though it can be quite physically demanding for which proper fitness is absolutely necessary. This trekking trip can be done by first-time trekkers too and no previous experience in the field is necessary. Warwan valley trek is not only a pleasure for the adventure seekers but it is an ideal expedition for the nature lovers too who finds it a privilege to bask in the undisturbed beauties of nature in a remote yet most beautiful valley of Warwan.

    Brief Itenerary

    • Arrive Srinagar (Alt. 1600m)
    • Pickup from Srinagar airport or Bus stand
    • 10 kms drive to Houseboat or Hotel at Dal Lake, approx 30 minutes
    (Transport from Srinagar airport or bus station to the hotel or houseboat. Tea, dinner and breakfast)

    • Altitude: 1600m to 2600m drive
    • 140 kms drive approx 6 hours
    (lunch, tea, dinner and the breakfast)

    • Altitude: 2600m to 2800m
    • 9 kms trek, approx 4 hours
    (lunch, tea, dinner and the breakfast)

    • Altitude: 3350m to 3700m
    • 5 km trek, approx 4 hours
    (lunch, tea, dinner and the breakfast)

    • Altitude: 2800m to 3200m
    • 14 kms trek, approx 6 hours

    Detailed Itnerary

    On arrival at Srinagar airport or bus station, our representative will receive you and transfer you to the hotel or houseboat at Dal Lake, Srinagar for an overnight stay.

    Srinagar-Inshan-Warwan (5 hours drive). Drive to Inshan taking Mughal Road through Achabal, Kokernag crossing Margan Top. Meet our trek staff and prepare yourself for the trek. Overnight stay in a guest house.

    Inshan-Sukhnoi (5 hours walk, 9 km). Walkthrough Warwan valley, passing some of the rare summer villages taking the inflowing Marwah river and camp at Sokhnai village for an overnight stay.

    Day at leisure.

    Sukhnoi-Hampet (6 hours walk, 14 km). Trek from Sokhnai to Hampet through endless meadows of alpine flowers and grazing fields of shepherds and under some beautiful waterfalls. We camp at Hampet meadow for an overnight.

    Hampet-Kaintal (7 hours walk, 13 km). Walking through a long lush green meadow we cross some rare nomadic Gypsy huts. Before reaching our campsite at Kaintal Nor we again cross a long grassy meadow. Overnight stay.

    Kaintal-Donard (8 hours walk, 17 km). The longest day of our trek will test our endurance while ascending the highest point of our trek “Bhatkol Pass” (4380M). Walking on a glacier we reach Donard meadow for an overnight stay.

    Donard-Panikhar (4 hours walk, 8 km). We leave Donard and trek through the meadows and Bakerwal huts and descend to Panikhar village in the Suru valley of Ladakh for an overnight stay. We can see how landscapes have changed over the past few days.

    Panikhar-Kargil-Srinagar (7 hours drive). We take our car and drive back to Srinagar through Kargil, Drass, Zojila, and Sonamarg. We arrive at Srinagar at our houseboat for an overnight stay.

    Our representative will drop you at the airport or bus station. Departure.

    WHAT TO CARRY

    The trek is supported by horses. You will need to carry only a light sack, weighing about 4-6kg for your items like passport, money, and camera gear. The following is a list of the items you should carry on the trek. If you have items that can not be used on the trek, you can store them at our houseboat or our office and take them back after returning from the trek.

    • Please note that only postpaid Indian mobile sim cards (Jio, Airtel and BSNL) work in Kashmir Valley. There’s no cellular connectivity from Day 2 to Day 6 of the trek.
    • Please double check your passport or Aadhar numbers before submitting through booking form. These numbers are required for preparation of trek permits.

    FITNESS

    Kashmir Ensueno are achievable by anyone with a healthy lifestyle and a good level of general fitness. Team members should be willing to be part of a team working together to achieve the goal of the expedition. As a team member, you should have an adventurous and robust spirit. The biggest challenge on this expedition is the first part of the trek across alpine terrain, much of which at altitudes of above 3000m.

    MINIMUM FITNESS REQUIREMENTS
    • Trek: up to 10km per day.
    • Daily activity: up to 5 hours’ trekking per day.
    • Carry: up to 5kg in a day sack.
    • Terrain: remote, uneven, snowy, icy, rocky, sometimes exposed terrain at up to 3600m.
    • Climate: Can be sunny in valleys and cold and windy at Gangabal. Averages are 3000m, 5 to 25C.
    • Swim: not required though there will be river crossings to make.
